Expertise
I specialise in commercial dispute resolution, dealing with a variety of specialist areas including intellectual property, shareholder / corporate disputes, construction disputes, professional negligence, insurance and general commercial contractual disputes.
Profile
I trained at City firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and specialised in accountants professional indemnity matters with a focus on insurance-related issues. I spent a year working in-house at Alliance & Leicester dealing with their most significant professional indemnity claims and joined Rawlison Butler in 1994. Since joining the firm, I have specialised in commercial contentious work and led the Litigation departments from 1998-2010, when I became Managing Partner of the firm. I now balance my Managing Partner duties with my work in the Commercial Dispute Resolution Department.

What others say about me
Clive and the Team have been consistently recognised in both the Legal 500 and Chambers directories, noting "a reputation for complex, high-value litigation, particularly in the healthcare, technology, retail and construction sectors."
In my spare time …
I enjoy indulging my passion for cars and motorsport, largely passively (at least not competing on the track!). I am still endeavouring to improve my golf and look forward to the winter so I can get on a pair of skis and follow the Blues through their usual trip to winning the Champions League. (I also love history, art, all types of music and the cinema!)
What I said when I was asked …
What has been the most memorable or challenging deal/case for you?
Possibly dealing with the negotiation of the successful settlement of a dispute regarding a contract to construct a power station which was subject to potentially very injurious (if not, punitive(!)) liquidated damages clause involving consecutive all day (and night) meetings in London and Scandinavia, resulting in myself and the opponent’s legal team all sleeping side by side in the first class departure lounge after the deal was signed!
What is your strongest characteristic - how your colleagues describe you?
An ability to dedicate myself to achieving the right result for my client without losing the objectivity that a lawyer must crucially retain if he is to serve the client’s best interests.
