The New Equality Act 2010

29 September 2010

A half day employment seminar on the new laws coming into force from October 2010

With guest speaker Dianah Worman, OBE - Adviser on Diversity, CIPD

The Equality Act 2010, which received Royal Assent on 8 April this year, represents the biggest shake up of discrimination law for many years. The Act consolidates all the different strands of discrimination law into one Act whilst introducing new terminology, definitions and new rights for employees.

It is vital for all employers to be aware of the changes the Act will introduce and how it will affect them, including the changes that will be needed to existing policies and procedures.

This seminar aims to ensure that you are ready and fully prepared for the new laws when they come into force.

Topics covered during this half-day seminar will include:

  • New terms and definitions – how does the new law change the definition of the different strands of discrimination?
  • Discrimination by association – how far will discrimination law extend?
  • Pre-employment health checks – what can you find out about your employees before your employ them?
  • Disability discrimination – how will the new law strengthen employee rights?
  • Positive action – How does the law encourage recruitment from minority groups?
  • How does the new Act be translate into HR practice and what changes will be required to existing policies?

Why should you attend?

Discrimination claims in the Employment Tribunal represent the fastest growing category of claim being brought by employees. Recently, a case was reported where employee earning £35,000 per year was awarded £500,000 in damages for discrimination. Discrimination awareness training is now considered to be a vital part of all managers training needs and attendance at this seminar will not only fulfil that requirement but it will also ensure your managers are brought up to date with the very latest developments in discrimination law.

Who should attend?

Directors, executives, managers, HR professionals and other decision makers

A certificate of attendance is available and can be a valuable record for the purpose of proving the statutory defence to, and successfully defending, tribunal proceedings.
